Chapter 7

Takeoff

You should congratulate yourself at this point. You have taken your project from idea stage, assessed its feasibility, planned every aspect of its deployment, evaluated the possible risks, and comprised contingency plans, and you are finally ready to start your deliverable.

Many project managers claim this is the downhill part of the project. Having done excessive planning, your activity in this phase and the next one is merely following the steps for which you have planned so carefully. You will find that as project manager, your activity will be heavily involved with meetings and following up on meeting items.

As you step through the phase, your focus will be on ensuring the project is deployed within the constraints you set forth. You also will spend much time communicating to the team and the sponsors about your progress. A good project manager and team will keep an eye on detail to identify any variances. Should they occur, the team will resolve what it can and escalate what it cannot as quickly as these instances arise.
